a little about the gardens

Garden 1

We have tried to make our gardens a space to chill out and relax. It is surprisingly bigger than you expect and a calm oasis. There’s of a mixture of trees , mature plants and cottage style flowers. All those who enter here beware the dragons.

From a Japanese garden to a tropical mix of all sorts, 5 fountains, a courtyard area, stone walling and gabions.

Garden 3

For the first time, Tibshelf Allotments are on show on Open Gardens Day. This presents a slightly different approach to gardening and it’s well worth the visit to see what’s grown there and to see the spectacular views over the valley.

Garden 4

Ours is a typical Edwardian garden built in 1913 with a long narrow back yard that once contained a privy and coal house. For the last twenty years we have been developing this space. Two seated areas that follow the sun providing secluded lighting for those balmy evenings. A small wildlife pond provides interest. Planting is compact and plenty, a system of trial and error for what works is key. We tailor our shrubs to keep them small. It is our special haven, a place to relax and refresh. Garden 5

With so much colour everywhere I just love people to stop and smile and hopefully it brightens up their day. I think struggling with my eyesight means I just plant brighter year on year!! I spend many hours daily in my garden to put on this colourful floral display but at 82 years old this is the first year I have asked for a little help with the structure of the garden ie posts etc, but all the digging and planting I do myself. Please enjoy my garden.

Garden 6

We have done a lot of work on both the garden and the cottage since we moved in, carefully considering the balance between modern and traditional. The garden to the front surrounded by lovely Holly and Laurel hedging leading onto a lawned area with borders of summer bedding plants. The little seat allows for a relaxing view onto the front, where birds swim in the stone bath. The rear garden is surrounded by a combination of stone walls and Holly hedge, with a corner summer house and garden seat arbour for those lazy days. Raised planters, summer hanging baskets and half barrels show off the mixed colours. Our garden has an established pond surrounded by planting as well as a relaxing patio with its own tastefully built bar.

Garden 8

We bought our bungalow because of its location, we have great views front & back. We experience all seasons in a quiet & tranquil setting. We aren’t professional or knowledgeable gardeners, we don’t know lots of flower or plant names, we just love to be outdoors gardening and enjoying our space. The quiet lane joins onto the five pits trail which is a lovely walk.. Our gardens have shrubs rockeries and an assortment of tubs and rose borders along with fruit tress, bushes and herbs. We also have an assortment of interesting buildings & structures to hopefully inspire you. Come along and say hello and tell us what you think.

Garden 9

The last two years we have been involved in a major redesign after we lost all our box hedging to blight. The axis of the garden has been changed and there is new, more informal planting.

Garden 10

Our Garden…It’s a bit of everything really, there’s a lawn, a pond, flowers and a patio. If possible we let things grow were they like to be and weeds are allowed as they’re only so many hours in a day! When you visit our garden you can sit and have a minute in a shady corner.

Garden 11

We have completely remodelled the garden over the last 5 years. The garden starts at the entrance to Winkpenny Lane. Over the last few years we’ve planted hundreds of daffodils in the grass verges and lower down the lane various shrubs and trees have been planted. The internal garden begins at the drive, with a raised bed of grasses. Entering the rear garden through a small gate to the left you’ll see the Blue Garden. This is the first of 6 garden rooms. The Glade, The Cottage Garden. The Exotic Garden, The Gravel Garden, The Quiet Garden with seats to enjoy a traditional area of grass and borders. We hope that you enjoy the garden as much as we do.

Garden 12

Nestled in the heart of Tibshelf lies our small but perfectly formed garden. The garden boasts part of the original stone wall, remnants of the Rock House Farm outbuildings. Ivy gracefully frames two sides, lending a touch of elegance and privacy, while a vibrant pyracantha hedge spans the rear, adding a burst of colour. A diverse collection of hostas thrives showcasing their vibrant foliage along with varying perennials. Completing the scene is a charming gazebo and a quaint side courtyard

Garden 13

This terraced garden has developed over a number of years with a tropical and exotic theme to its planting. Many of the plants have been collected from around the country with Cornwall providing a number of wonderful specimens. From the patio seating walk down the decked steps and see the Palms, Acers, Bamboos and Tetrapanax forming a canopy before reaching the first level. Relax in the corner arbour to appreciate the view. A variety of ferns line the route down to the lower levels of the garden to the sound of running water from the pond. The “Hideaway” provides a place to relax and take in the ambience. Just relax, meditate and enjoy!

Garden 14

A quiet, peaceful garden set in half an acre surrounded by fields and adjacent to Tibshelf ponds with views of the South Pennines. A developing wildlife area with pond is set amongst a canopy of trees. Summer bedding in planters with shrub/perennial borders are interspersed with annuals. Badger, fox and squirrels are regular visitors along with Greater Spotted Woodpecker, a pair of Mallards (on the pond). Tawny Owl (never seen but heard),Tree Creeper and even a Great Grey Shrike. Due to seasonal changes there may be some area’s that are not up to the required standard. The beauty of gardening is that you are constantly challenged to adapt.

Venue 15

Recently a lot of work has gone into improving this area, not only with re-stocking the ponds and improving water quality but also in the planting of the area. Well worth a visit to see what is now a beautiful part of Tibshelf and a great fishing venue.
